Allison Weiss is an energetic 24-year-old with an electric guitar, an avid online following, and a whole lot of feelings. With her quirky charm and sharp pop sensibilities, her three-minute pop songs make losing sound a little more fun. “I’m all about catchy, upbeat, feel-good music, but the one thing I always write about is heartbreak,” she admitted to Billboard.com, “I say [my songs] sound like your saddest memories sung to the tune of your happiest.”
Weiss first picked up a guitar at age 14 in an attempt to become a punk rock star and impress her high school crush. Though the plan was somewhat successful, the teenage romance died after one short month. Her undying love for music lived on.
After moving to Athens, GA for school, she spent the next five years in and out of various pseudo-relationships which fueled the fire for one infectious breakup song after another. She toured the southeast relentlessly with friends like Jenny Owen Youngs, Bess Rogers, Lelia Broussard, and more. She worked hard and wrote constantly, self-releasing four EPs and a full length album all while quietly building up a dedicated online following and getting a college degree.
In late 2009, Weiss created a Kickstarter project to press her first full-length. After reaching her goal in 10 hours and tripling it over 2 months, she became a poster-child for internet promotion and appeared in The New York Times, Wired Magazine, and as a panelist at SXSW 2010. Shortly thereafter she packed her life into a 14ft moving truck and drove to Brooklyn forever, ready and eager to start work on a brand new record with producer and friend Chris Kuffner.
A long-awaited departure from her previous work, the forthcoming album is louder, faster, and more fun than ever. Trading acoustic for electric and dresses for denim, Weiss is embracing her inner teenager. She’s just as angsty-yet-hopeful as ever, with new songs that showcase her unique brand of high-energy folk-infused power pop. Even alone with an acoustic guitar, solo shows are powerful and captivating. With a knack for awkwardly endearing on-stage banter, she weaves hilariously self-deprecating stories of love and loss between every upbeat breakup song.
The yet untitled sophomore full-length is preceded by a self-released 7”, the I Was An Island EP which features two new tracks, a remix by The Age of Rockets, and the original version of the single “I Was An Island.” The records are handmade, printed, and shipped by Weiss herself.
Always up to something, Weiss finished out 2011 with another successful Kickstarter project, this time raising over $30,000 in 30 days with the promise of making three albums worth of material. Not only will the new record be followed up with an acoustic version, but also a series of b-sides to be released every month over the course of the next year.
